Choir Auditions 2021 will be a hybrid of virtual video submission and in-person. We will hold the first round of auditions virtually and an in-person callback for Chamber Choir and Motive. If you are interested in one of the advanced ensembles (Chamber Choir, A Cappella Choir, or Motive), you must submit your audition by Monday April 19th. Consideration for other choirs (Man Choir, Con Brio) will remain open through the end of the school year and into the summer.
Dates:
Virtual Auditions due by Monday April 19th
Callback lists for Chamber Choir and Motive posted on Monday April 26th
In-Person Chamber Choir Callbacks on Thursday April 29th, 1:30-2:30
In-Person Motive Callbacks on Friday April 30th, 1:30-2:30
Audition results posted Saturday May 8th
Your virtual audition has three components. All three muse be completed before the April 19th deadline:
1. Audition Information Sheet: https://forms.gle/4pMcXozdoJsAUWhQ8
2. Video submission. You may only submit one video. You can either complete all four parts below in one take, or combine multiple videos together into one using video editing software. Say your name at the beginning of your video. Edit the video file name to display your name as well. You may upload your video through Google Drive, Dropbox, or YouTube and share it with bretttaylor@alpinedistrict.org, or attach it directly to an email. Make sure to adjust the sharing permissions so that I have permission to view it.
Range: You will need two devices, one to play the audio example and another to video record you singing along. Download the file below called “Range”. On the recording you will hear a series of piano exercises that you will sing along to. This will allow me to assess how low and how high you can sing. Make sure that you are singing full and that you can be heard above the sound of the piano. Do not use headphones, as I need to hear the piano part along with your voice.
Part Independence: You will need two devices, one to play the audio example and another to video record you singing along. Download the file below called “Part Independence”. On the recording you will hear a simple melody. You may listen and sing along to it as many times as you would like until you feel prepared. Then practice singing your melody along with the harmony part provided on the piano. When ready, video record yourself singing along to the recording. You will first be asked to sing your melody by yourself, then again while listening to the harmony part. Do not use headphones, as I need to hear the piano part along with your voice.
Prepared Piece(s): Please sing 20-30 seconds of a solo song that shows off your best classical, choral sound. You do not need to have it memorized. Please sing unaccompanied (no piano or backup tracks). If you are interested in Motive A Cappella, you should also sing 20-30 seconds of a song that shows off your contemporary voice (pop, music theater, jazz).
Sight Reading: Download the PDF file below called “Sight Reading 2021”. You may practice it as much as you would like before recording. You may use a piano when practicing, but should not when recording. When you go to video record, do not stop the recording in between sight reading lines. Follow the instructions on the PDF.
3. Music Knowledge Evaluation: Download the PDF file below called “Music Knowledge Evaluation 2021”. This is an open personal test, meaning that you can use the internet or books to learn the concepts and answer the questions, but YOU MAY NOT TALK WITH ANYONE ABOUT THE SPECIFIC TEST QUESTIONS. Do not work together with other students. Do not ask your parents or friends for help. This is an open source test, but not an open person test. When you are ready, submit your evaluation responses through this google form: https://forms.gle/cEqZgX72kqTT9CBD9. You may only submit one response.

Instructions to upcoming 10th Graders
There are a number of options for upcoming 10th graders:
Since the audition happens after class registration, the best course of action is to sign up for the choir you wish to be in, and be prepared with an alternate after audition results are posted.
- Concert Choir – This requires no audition. You can just sign up! This choir rehearses during B7 semester 1 only.
- Man Choir / Con Brio – These choirs require either an audition or a recommendation from your junior high choir director. If you are currently in choir as a 9th grader, just let your teacher know that you are interested and they will then consider you for their list of recommendations. If you are not in choir as a 9th grader, you will need to audition, following the virtual audition instructions above. Man Choir rehearses A4 and Con Brio A3.
- Motive - Motive is one of our top vocal groups and available to any grade level. Follow the virtual audition instructions above to audition.
